The first step in recovering from drug and alcohol addiction is medical detox. This process helps your body get rid of toxins from substance abuse and involves dealing with withdrawal symptoms—both physical and psychological symptoms that occur when you stop using substances.
Withdrawal symptoms vary for each person based on factors like the type of substance, how long it was used, frequency of use, gender, height, weight, medical history, and co-occurring disorders. Severe withdrawal symptoms can be dangerous, even life-threatening, and medical attention may be needed.
In a medically supervised detox program like ours, clients are supervised by medical professionals who monitor each individual’s vital signs and help manage the discomfort of withdrawal with medications and other therapies. It’s important to understand that a detox program isn’t the end of addiction treatment. After medical detox, you will move on to other programs like inpatient or outpatient treatment.
